curious george and the birthday party

It was a celebration for Lily’s 4th birthday.  Some of her favorite friends came, we had a bounce house and junk food along with delicious cupcakes.  But what took the party to the next level was Sam’s enthusiastic portrayal of the Man in the Yellow Hat from Curious George.  He was a huge hit with the young and old!

Lily was thrilled to have her friends and cousins over–the playing did not stop until it had to.  Everyone slept well that night!

its your birthday!

oh lily!  you are 4 years old!  what a girl.  truly.  you are an ever-present joy to us and just growing up so (too) fast!  this year we are having a “real” birthday party but first we celebrated as a family with presents, some donuts for breakfast, and a milkshake at lunch.  oh-and don’t forget the princesses…they were there, too!

Easter…and Dada Was Back!

since we are trying to find a house in pittsburgh, sam was traveling in april but made it home for easter.  of course we dyed easter eggs, ate candy, hunted for those eggs-both at home and at gramma and grampa’s house, and ate ham.  ollie definitely didn’t get the hunting part of the day but lily did.

San Antonio Hike–Goodbye Friends!

we made some good friends in California.  this group we met way back in the beginning and the kids are so close in age (april birthdays)…its neat to get together and see how they are so alike in behavior.
this was our last chance to have a playmate and we decided to hike rancho san antonio–something we did a few times before.  a mile out to the farm and a mile back.  this time there was lots of exploring on their own.  we will miss maureen and rachel, james, matthew and sarah, and penelope, mason and tara.

And then there’s this…

We are going on a full week of single parenthood while Sam settles into Pittsburgh life.  It has been tiring but not overly so; we just keep going and build in time to rest.  However, by bedtime, everyone is ready for the day to end so we can recharge.  (at least I feel that way 🙂

Tonight was pretty typical–dinner and bath, followed by reading and Ollie going down, then Lily.  Well, Ollie must have eaten too much because he threw up everything after bath and pj’s.  Cleaned that up and moved onto reading to Lily.

I have been downstairs on Pinterest for the last few minutes listening to her make a lot of noise upstairs for someone who should be asleep.  I just crept up to see what was going on.  She has been staying in our bedroom since Sam left, fyi.

I snuck down the hall.  She was sitting in an open suitcase, using the straps like seat belts, talking to herself and reading a little directions packet from some box in the bathroom.  I didn’t disturb her because she was so content.  And the noise has finally stopped, so I think she is back in bed, hopefully snoozing.

These kids slay me.

Another Great Day!

In Lily’s preschool class last year, every day ended with the children gathered on the floor to say the class “cheer” and it went something like this:   We are the Little Bunnies.   We play together.  We pray together.  We work together.  We’ll be back to have another GREAT DAY!  (this last part, last year, was shouted at the top of their little lungs).

We had one of those today.  A great day.  The beach with friends and then dinner made for us and swimming with grandparents.  Is it any wonder both Lily and Ollie are fast asleep upstairs?  Why aren’t I?

Ollie fell into the little creek running down to the ocean.  He did not like it one bit.  But he loved the sand and the seagulls and watching all the big kids play.  Lily was an adventure girl, racing around the whole beach with her friend, Nora Jane, jumping from one level of sand to another and changing her outfit at least 4 times.  Yes, even on the beach.  With not that many clothes to change into.

Updates*Updates*Updates

These kids are pretty funny.  Lily, especially, has turned into (continues to be?) a chatterbox with a memory like a steel trap.  The other night at dinner, as we were deciding what to talk about…usually Lily suggests work since this is what we tell we are talking about when she isn’t the one being focused upon…she had a suggestion:

“Let’s talk about penises!”

Sam’s only reply:  “We really should be on TV.”

I just hope she doesn’t throw this out during lunch at preschool.

Then, last night, getting ready for reading before bed, we were looking at her fairies.  She asked me, “Mommy, why do fairies have bibs?”

“Bibs?  What are bibs, Lil?”

“These.”, as she pulled down Tinkerbell’s green outfit and pointed to the bumps underneath.  “Bibs.”

“Oooohhhhhh, those are called boobs, Lily.  Girls get them when they are going to have babies.”

Ollie, on the other hand, though not talking in complete sentences, is pretty amusing.  I wonder if he wasn’t the second-born, the baby brother to a big sister, if he would have the affinity for shoes he seems to have right now.  Throughout the day he approaches me with shoes in hand–mine, his, Lily’s–and sits right down in front of me, lifting his foot.  Whatever he brings over I put on and he clomps and falls and walks around with one or two shoes on.  Rarely do they match.

Beautiful Day for the Zoo

After living here for two-plus years, I’ve come to love fall in CA.  It is nothing like back East but it does have its fair share of color changes and some leaves coming down (thanks to the gardeners we don’t have to rake!).  And it has these gorgeous, sunny, warm days.  They just seem like a bonus summertime.  Californians call it Indian Summer but that’s not what I think of it as; more like Bonus Beauty Autumn Days.

We invited Gramma Hurley to come to the zoo with us one Sunday after Thanksgiving.  It was Ollie’s first time and he loved the animals (though we wanted to pet them all and we could only do that in the petting zoo area).  Highlights included the Prairie Dog and Meerkat area, the baby turtles and our train ride.  Lily is still talking about it.

Thanksgiving in Pictures

Here, as promised, a few scenes from our Thanksgiving feast.
Little Man is growing…his vest is a little TOO tight and short

But he sure is handsome!

A little presto-chango of the birthday decor and VIOLA, Happy Thanksgiving!

That sums it all up!
